Whether it’s a trip to the park, or an outing with friends, a mobility scooter can give you your freedom back. But with so many makes, models and prices out there, how can you be sure to buy one that’s right for you? Our Mobility Specialist David has some suggestions.

Who could benefit from buying a mobility scooter?
All sorts of people! Some of our customers have limited mobility due to a physical disability or illness. Others are elderly and struggling to walk long distances. Mobility scooters aren’t for everyone though – if you’re still relatively mobile, a walking aid might be more suitable.

What are your top tips for choosing a mobility scooter?
Make sure you buy one that’s right for you. Mobility scooters come in different sizes and powers. If you’re mainly going to be driving around town, a smaller, lighter weight scooter which can travel in the back of a car might be best. If you’re planning to go further or over uneven terain, you might need a larger scooter, with decent suspension and a more powerful battery. A good mobility specialist should talk you through all the options, to make sure you’re buying the right scooter for your needs.

How much do mobility scooters cost?
As with cars, prices vary. They start at around £450, but more powerful models can cost over £6,000. Grants and finance options are available to help. Beware of ‘deals’ by some unscrupulous companies, such as being offered 50% off if you order your scooter that day. The scooter may have been advertised at a vastly inflated price to start with.

How can people make sure they buy the best scooter?
A good mobility specialist will help you to choose the scooter that’s right for you, suits your needs and is within your budget. They should always talk through the different options, and never put any pressure on you to buy. What else should people consider?
Good customer service is really important. You want your mobility specialist to be someone who will listen, understand and help you make the right choice. Always check that the person you’re buying from is going to assemble the scooter for you, show you how to use it and make sure you’re happy with it.
