Aids for Daily Living

Making eating easier in the kitchen

Parkinson’s, dementia, arthritis and other conditions can make eating a struggle. It’s not always easy to grip conventional cutlery, or hold a cup steady. At Living Needs we sell a wide range of utensils that have been specially designed to make eating and drinking easier.

They range from anti-slip cutlery grips and two-handled mugs, to ‘tilt to pour’ kettles. The new Uccello ‘Power Pour’ Kettle is lightweight and stylish.  It tilts forward so you can easily pour a cup of tea. No more manoeuvring a heavy kettle full of potentially scalding water. You can also buy kitchen aids, such as automatic can openers, or cooking baskets that reduce the risk of getting scalded.

Help with bathing

If limited mobility is making it harder to reach your back, shoulders or feet, a long-handled sponge can prove very useful. There are also a range of products that have been specially designed for people who are unable to leave their beds. An inflatable hair washing basin, for instance, means you can have your hair washed while you’re in bed, without soaking the sheets.

Making it easier to get dressed

When it comes to getting dressed, there are lots of products that can help, such as button hooks, which help you to do your buttons up when your fingers are stiff or inflexible. A dressing stick can help you to pull on, and push off, clothes, while stocking aids make it easier to put on tights, socks or stockings. Elastic shoe laces can also be used with most shoes and don’t require tying each time.

Moving around your home with greater confidence

A fear of stumbling or slipping can make it tempting to stay in one place as much as possible. Grab rails make it easier to move around your home, and pull yourself up steps. Anti-slip strips and circles are also a good idea for areas that are likely to get wet, such as baths, shower trays and bathroom floors.

Extra help

There really are too many living aids to list here. From long-handled combs to handy grabbers, there are so many low-cost items that can make a real difference to your day-to- day life. If you give us a call at Living Needs on 01271 374600, we’d be more than happy to chat about which ones might be most useful for you. Or pop into our newly enlarged showroom, halfway down Mill Road in Barnstaple.

Members of Federation of Master Builders

The Federation of Master Builders

The Federation of Master Builders is the UK's largest trade association in the building industry.  Established in 1941 to protect the interests of small and medium-sized building firms, the FMB is independent and non-profit-making, lobbying continuously for members’ interests at both national and local levels.

The FMB is a source of knowledge, professional advice and support for its members. The FMB also offers advice to consumers via its 'find a builder' and 'check a member' web pages giving you peace of mind that your project will be handled professionally.

FMB's mission is that "Our construction companies are uniquely placed in the construction market to deliver the highest quality and best value to clients."

Trust Mark: Government Endorsed Standards

TrustMark is a Government-backed quality mark which operates a framework under which 26 scheme operators work in the Repair, Maintenance and Improvement sector, including trade associations, local government trading standards teams, and independent scheme operators.

These schemes are approved to carry the TrustMark logo and recruit reputable and trustworthy tradesmen. This enables the TrustMark scheme operators to promote improved standards, and tackle related issues such as better enforcement. All of these scheme operators are audited annually by TrustMark, to ensure processes, standards and complaint procedures are being maintained.
